to Mr.Eyes in due course.

We feel sure that no slight to Mr. Ives was in His Excell-

ency's mind, but as it is so important, if the work is to proceed

satisfactorily, that the authority and position of the Chief

Resident Engineer should be maintained unimpaired we may perhaps

express a hope that some step may be taken to remove any mis-

construction in the eyes of the public or those engaged on the

works.
